"Riddles" can increase children's capabilities to explain things and think deeply.

So, why "Riddles"?

It was when my son brought his homework home that I came up with "Riddles." At the time, he was 4 years old and joined a language learning class (which was meant for children with difficulties in learning their own language as quickly as other children).

One day, he brought homework where he was supposed to answer a certain type of questions, such as "What is 00 like?" This homework was meant to facilitate the children to learn how to "verbally explain the features of things." Despite my encouragement, however, it did not work for my son. At the time, he was still not able to handle words well enough to explain things.

Then, I started to ask him in the reverse way. Not a question like "What is 00 like?" but "It is like 00, 00, and/or 00. What is it?" ? in other words, riddles. We did a lot of riddles.

Doing a lot of riddles means listening a lot to "how things are explained." Then, this can lead to increase in "verbal capabilities to explain things." Actually, when my son and I did riddles, he enjoyed them so much that he not only answered spontaneously but also started to create riddles on his own. Then, he even started to ask me some riddles.

Creating riddles on their own and asking others the riddle ? this means "the child is explaining things (right answers to questions), doesn't it?. Riddles, therefore, can provide good practice to increase children's verbal capabilities to give explanations to things as well as to think effectively by handling words.

By having fun with "Riddles," children find themselves growing verbally. Doing riddles is a highly recommended word game.
